Getting to San Miguel

San Miguel de Allende is a colonial city in the highlands north of Mexico City, known for its cobblestone streets, rooftop terraces, remarkable cuisine, and extraordinary light. Travel + Leisure magazine named it the best city in the world in 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2024–2026. Reaching it requires a flight and a drive; once you arrive, everything is within walking distance.

Flights

Airports

San Miguel de Allende is approximately equidistant from the airports in Querétaro (QRO) and León / Guanajuato (BJX). Both airports have flights to major hubs in the United States as well as key cities throughout Mexico. Querétaro is marginally closer than León, but we suggest just using whichever airport has the most convenient flight schedule for you.

Mexico City (MEX) is about 3.5–4 hours drive from San Miguel de Allende and has many more direct flight options than Querétaro or León. This may make sense if you are flying from overseas, are extremely averse to connecting flights, or want to bookend our wedding weekend with a few days exploring Mexico City. The road from Mexico City is a safe, modern highway.

Querétaro (QRO)

≈ 1.5 hr drive to San Miguel

The closest airport. Direct flights from Houston, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, and others.

León / Guanajuato (BJX)

≈ 1.5 hr drive to San Miguel

Direct flights from Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Oakland, Chicago, Atlanta, and others.

Mexico City (MEX)

≈ 3.5–4 hr drive to San Miguel

The widest selection of flights, and an opportunity to visit Mexico City before or after the wedding.

Where to stay

Hotels

Our guests have exclusive use of the Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada for the entire weekend, and most events will take place in its venues. The hotel comprises a collection of six immaculately restored Spanish colonial mansions dating from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. It was named the #1 city hotel in Mexico in the 2026 Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards. We strongly recommend staying there if possible, although it has just 35 rooms, so book early if you would like to do so.

But don't fret if you are unable to snag a room at the Casa de Sierra Nevada. San Miguel de Allende has a compact, walkable core filled with innumerable boutique hotels and private homes available for rent at all price points. You really can't go wrong, and you will never be more than a 20-minute walk from anywhere else.

Private homes

San Miguel offers a wide selection of private homes for rent at every price point. We recommend searching in Centro to stay within walking distance of the venues.

Getting around

Transportation

Airport transfers

BajioGo offers comfortable and reliable shuttle transfers (both private and shared) between San Miguel and QRO, BJX, and MEX airports. We advise booking at least two weeks in advance, as many guests will be arriving at the same time. Official airport taxis and rideshare services like Uber and DiDi are also available.

From Mexico City

We recommend hiring a private driver for the journey from Mexico City for door-to-door service. However, several operators offer shared luxury bus transfers that are comfortable and reliable. The journey takes 3.5–4 hours on a safe, modern highway.

Getting around town

San Miguel is best explored on foot. The hotels, venues, restaurants, and shops of Centro are all within about fifteen minutes of one another.

For trips beyond the immediate core, rideshare services Uber and DiDi are widely available and offer convenient, up-front pricing.

Extend your stay

While you're there

There is a reason the readers of Travel + Leisure have named San Miguel the best city in the world six times. If you are able to stay a few extra days, the city rewards the time. Here are a few of our favorite ways to spend it.

The full pink facade of La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel

El Jardín & La Parroquia

The central plaza of San Miguel, set beneath the iconic pink Gothic spires of La Parroquia. It is especially lovely at sunset, with an esquite from one of the street carts.

Cactus garden at the entrance of Fábrica La Aurora

Fábrica La Aurora

A century-old textile mill transformed into an art and design center, with galleries, artist studios, fine furnishings, and a café for a leisurely morning.

Rooftop hour

Golden hour in San Miguel is unforgettable. Quince, Bekeb, and Luna Rooftop at the Rosewood all offer mezcal cocktails with sweeping views of the city's church spires.

Terraced turquoise thermal pools in warm stone

La Gruta Hot Springs

Natural thermal pools fifteen minutes outside town, including one reached through a candlelit tunnel. A restorative way to spend the day after the wedding.

Colorful Talavera pottery stacked at a market stall

Mercado de Artesanías

Three blocks of Talavera pottery, woven textiles, and punched-tin stars. We suggest leaving room in your suitcase.

Santuario de Atotonilco

Ten minutes beyond La Gruta, this UNESCO World Heritage sanctuary is covered in 18th-century frescoes and is often called the Sistine Chapel of Mexico.

Traveler's notes

  • U.S., Canadian, U.K., and E.U. citizens need only a valid passport; no visa is required for stays of under 180 days.
  • We suggest carrying some pesos for markets and taxis; credit cards are accepted nearly everywhere else.
  • Please drink only bottled or filtered water, which hotels typically provide.
  • October is one of the finest months of the year here: sunny and in the mid-70s by day, in the 50s at night. We recommend bringing a layer for the evenings.
